The history of the city of Dubrovnik
During the seventh century, Dalmatia is being settled by Slavic tribes in the immediate vicinity Ragusium (as it was then called), across the sea strait, a settlement of the Slovenian name Dubrovnik was born.
The name is probably named after the oak forests in this region today called Dubrava (Dub - Oak in the old Slavic language). The island is located at only a tenth of meters from the shore and later during the 10th and 11th centuries because of debris strait between the mainland and the island, it became more shallow and finally the two villages were connected at the end of the 11th century. At this junction (embankment) is today's Stradun. Later, in the late 12th century the two settlements were established and surrounded by the same walls.
